China. Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

Heavy Bronze with lacquer gilding and dark Patina. In official garb, and with a courtly head cover, he sits as the God of culture and learning on a throne. His face with long beard strands showing a dignified expression. In verehrendem gesture with in front of the chest folded hands, he held a once-a hu-rod. The throne still shows remnants of the original polychrome paint. Right knee fine in the Bronze-engraved decorative borders of the robe are among the fallen painting recognizable.

Ming period bronze figures of this size and this weight are rare, also the lacquer gilding is mostly exceptionally well. Weight 6850g, height 36cm. Condition A/B.
Provenance:
-Private Collection, Belgium.
-Private collection Netherlands, since about 10 years.

Comparison:
-A similar piece, but with a less well-received Polish version of which was auctioned at the 15.3.2017 under Lot 551 at Sotheby's New York
