Estimate value
£ 1 500 – 2 000
Photograph album. Iraq and India: 1919-1926.
Large collection of important photographs showing a British serviceman with a Machine Gun Company travelling to India via Iraq in the 1920s. The album opens with some photographs of Egypt dated 1919, and then moves eastwards to Mosul, with some 7 photographs dated 1920. These are faded, but show interesting shots of mounted troops moving through the city as well as the bridges over the Tigris and various swimmers in the river itself. A number of smaller photographs show the Machine Gun Company give a demonstration to a ‘Class of Armenian Refuges’, as well as the company’s sporting activities such as polo and athletics. The company then travels to Baghdad and Basra, before embarking on board ship to Bombay in 1921. The photographs of India are captioned and dated ‘Benares 1921’, ‘Cawnpore 1922’, ‘Peshawar 1925’ and ‘Peshawar 1926’. Various formal shots of large parade formations and smaller unit photographs are interspersed with fishing trips and picnics, as well as images of the photographer’s various horses.
Oblong folio album containing approximately 131 small (55 x 85mm), 74 medium (145 x 85mm) and 14 large (230 x 290mm or larger or smaller) original photographs, mounted on 24 leaves (340 x 247mm), with some manuscript ink captions. Contemporary cloth (extremities lightly rubbed).
