Private ownership, France.
Verso is a label in French: "Giorgion. Une femme attachant l'armure à un guerrier".
The present painting is based on a prototype by Giorgione da Castefranco, now lost, which was kept in Paris at the end of the 18th century, in the collection of Louis Philippe II de Bourbon-Orléans, and in the collection of the Earl of Carslile after his beheading in 1793. The composition of the painting has been influenced by some copies of the French school, among them by Antoine Coypel (1661-1722), and engravings.
However, the present work does not appear to be a late 18th century copy, but rather perhaps a 16th or 17th century work.
