Further details
Eager for new subjects to paint, it was in the autumn of 1945 that Jacques Majorelle decided to embark for West Africa. He travelled there on three occasions: first to French Sudan - now Mali - in 1945, then to Guinea in 1947, and finally to Ivory Coast in 1952.
This painting was produced during his trip to Ivory Coast in 1952: “Paintings from this African period, as well as those he painted in Marrakesh after 1952, appear more realistic but also more severe than those produced in the preceding decade […] Jacques Majorelle’s palette had completely changed […] He who had been so discreet, so nuanced, so subtle in the play of shadow and light, using only three or four different colours on one canvas, now plunged into forceful, contrasting colour harmonies” (F. and A. Marcilhac, op. cit., Paris, 2019, p. 183).
With its characteristic palette of delicate pinks and gleaming browns, mixed with very bright yellows in the foreground, Aïcha au pagne jaune is an iconic example of the artist’s explorations during this period.
