G. war als Architekt tätig, bevor er ab 1962 in Los Angeles als freier Künstler zu arbeiten begann. Noch im selben Jahr gelang ihm der Durchbruch, als das MoMA in New York eines seiner Werke ankaufte. Auf dem Höhepunkt seines Ruhmes Anfang der 70er Jahre zog G. sich aus der Öffentlichkeit zurück und begann erst in den 80er Jahren wieder auszustellen.
