Madame Talian und Joséphine de Beauharnais beim Nackttanz vor Barras. Mit der Nummer ''37'' in der rechten unteren Ecke der Platte. Radierung auf BA 33,7 x 46,8 cm. Lichtrand. Rahmen besch. Für die Bearbeitung nicht ausgerahmt. Die 1805 bei H. Humphrey in London erstmals publizierte Radierung zeigt Paul-François-Jean-Nicolas, Vicomte de Barras (1755 Fox-Amphoux - 1829 Chaillot). Barras war ein französischer Politiker und Mitglied des Direktoriums, in dem er als einziger von 1795 bis zu seiner Auflösung 1799 durchgehend Mitglied war. Barras war als korrupter Lebemann bekannt. Joséphine de Beauharnais, die 1796 Napoleon heiratete, war seine Geliebte. Ihrer überdrüssig geworden, bot er Napoleon Bonaparte die Leitung der Ägypten-Expedition an - unter der Voraussetzung, dass er gleichzeitig Joséphine zu seiner Frau nähme. Auf dem Paravant hinter Napoleon, der die Szene hinter einem Vorhang beobachtet, sind die ägyptischen Pyramiden und ein auf einem Krokodil reitender Amor zu sehen. Bei ''Madame Talian'' handelt es sich um Joséphines lebenslustige Freundin Thérésia Cabarrus, eine Kurtisane, die 1794 Jean Lambert Tallien geehelicht hatte. 1805, als Gillray diese Radierung - die zu den zunächst zurückgehaltenen ''unanständigen Blättern'' zählte - fertigte, wurde die Kaiserkrönung der Beiden in England heftig diskutiert.
