STAVEREN, JAN ADRIENSZ VAN
Leyden 1625 - 1668

Title: Kitchen Still Life.
Technique: Oil on wood.
Measurement: 29,5 x 24cm.
Frame: Framed.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.

Jan Adriaensz van Staveren belonged to the "Fijnschilders", literally "fine painters", a guild that was active in the Netherlands from about 1630 to 1710. Its most prominent member was Gerrit Dou, whose paintings hang in the great museums of Europe today and represent the Golden Age of the Netherlands. Characteristic of the "Fijnschilders" were small formats painted with the utmost meticulousness, which were primarily intended for private use - one should also be able to easily transport them from A to B. The artistic aspiration of the members of the guild and their aesthetic standard was the truthful and lifelike reproduction of reality. Thus, the present painting is also characterised by the attention to detail, which is particularly evident in the surfaces depicted: Almost indignant at the disturbance, the depicted kitchen maid looks at us as she cuts some parsley roots. Placed in front of her, we find a copper pot that slightly reflects the incoming light from the left corner; a large quantity of vegetable onions and a voluminous cabbage prominently occupy the foreground. A fire glows thoughtfully in the background.
