Jan Barend Elwe (fl. 1785-1809)
Mappe monde ou description du globe terrestre & aquatique. Amsterdam: 1792
Highly decorative double-hemisphere world map prepared by Hubert Jaillot for his Atlas Royalfirst published in 1695, this is the rare reissue published almost a century later. Although the coastline of Australia is now slightly separated from that of New Guinea, anachronisms such as California as an island, and the remants of the outline of a vast southern continent, remain. French claims to North America are prominently marked on the landmass and in the North Atlantic as 'Canada ou Nouvelle France'. Shirley, World 561.

Hand-coloured engraved double-hemisphere world map, within large decorative and intricately detailed surround with 8 large allegorical figures, the four at the top representing the arts, governance, law and medicine, the four at the bottom representing the four continents, verso blank, image 460 x 615mm (540 x 630mm sheet).
