Fotografie als neues Medium
Der niederländische Künstler Jan Dibbets beschäftigt sich zunächst mit abstrakter Malerei, bevor er sich ab 1969 der Land Art und schließlich der Fotografie zuwendet. Auch Videoarbeiten gehören zum Repertoire des Künstlers, der damit zu einem der Hauptvertreter der europäischen Konzeptkunst wurde. Im Anschluss an seine Videokunst entstehen großformatige Collagen, in denen Dibbets Fotografien und Zeichnungen kombiniert.

1986 wurde mit dem Ankauf von "Four Courts, Dublin" das Medium Fotografie in die Bayer-Sammlung eingeführt. Neben der Aufnahme des ersten fotografischen Werkes wurde mit diesem Kauf auch der Anspruch auf Internationalität in der Sammlung bekräftigt. Das Werk weist eine umfangreiche und internationale Ausstellungshistorie auf: bereits 1987 wurde die Arbeit im Guggenheim Museum in New York ausgestellt und ging als Leihgabe für eine Wanderretrospektive an das Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

Eine andere Seherfahrung
Die Arbeit zeigt eine Collage aus Fotografien und zeichnerischen Elementen vor einem einheitlichen grauen Aquarellhintergrund. Die Fotografien fassen den gesamten Innenraum des irischen Gerichtsgebäudes ein, sind kreisförmig angeordnet und werden durch einige Zeichnungen verstärkt und erweitert. Der Betrachter blickt vom elliptischen Zentrum, das das Licht förmlich einfängt, bis zur Decke in einen scheinbar unendlichen Raum.

Der Künstler verbindet in seiner Arbeit verschiedene Blickwinkel und lässt verwirrende Perspektiven entstehen. Die sich ergänzenden Bauelemente schaffen eine imaginäre Architektur, die die Sehgewohnheiten des Betrachters herausfordert.
