Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.
Paul Huys Janssen describes the presently displayed painting as an unequivocal works of van Bijlert, with all features characteristic for the artist, in his certificate from July 2015.
Van Bijlert's composition of this moment in which Thisbe discovers her dead beloved Pyramus and decides to take her own life has been known only through a copy of a hand other than that of the artist for a long time (see additional image after RKD online databank, ill. no. 211280).
As a directly comparable painting Huys Janssen views for example the canvas painting 'Venus straft Cupido' (engl. 'Venus punishes Cuoid') that is kept at the museum Norfolk and has approximately the same measurements as they would be expected with the present work in its original form.
