Öl auf Leinwand 68,5 x 91,3 cm. Doubliert. Restaurierung. Rahmen min. beschädigt Rechts haben die Schauspieler ihre Stegreifbühne aufgebaut. Zahlreiche Zuschauer und Flaneure, darunter auch zwei orientalische Kaulfleute links, haben sich zu ihnen gesellt, ein Gondoliere sucht den Blickkontakt zu einer vornehmen Dame mit ihrem Kavalier, dem zentralen Figurenpaar im Vordergrund. Ulrich Pietsch behandelt in seinem Kurzbeitrag (s. u.) ein Gemäldepaar, das unter dem Titel "Hochzeit Marie Antoinettes (1755-1793) mit Ludwig XVI. (1754-1793), 1770" katalogisiert ist. Das angebotene Gemälde ist eines der beiden Bilder. Auf dem anderen - nicht angebotenen - Werk ist vor antikisierender Architekturkulisse eine Szene wiedergegeben, auf dem sich in der Tat - ausgezeichnet durch ihre Familienwappen, Marie-Antoinette und Louis XVI. auf Balkonen gegenüberstehen. Pietsch vermutet einen Zusammenhang der Gemälde mit der "joyeuse entrée" auf dem Place Louis XV. (heute Place de la Concorde) in Paris, zu der Architekturkulissen den Rahmen bildeten. Ebenso schlägt er Joseph Hauzinger (1728 Wien -1786 ebenda) als ausführenden Künstler vor. Den Schlüssel zur Identifizierung des Künstlers liefert hingegen ein Gemälde "An elegant interior with a Turkish gentleman courting a Russian lady", das am 6. Juli 2011 bei Bonhams in London versteigert wurde. Dieses trug die Signatur des Jean-Baptiste Le Prince. Engste stilistische Übereinstimmungen in der Wiedergabe der Figuren, der Physiognomien und der Stofflichkeiten ermöglichen eine Zuschreibung des vorliegenden Gemäldes an Le Prince. Jean-Baptiste Le Prince erfuhr seine Ausbildung unter anderem bei François Boucher in Paris. 1757 reiste der junge Künstler nach St. Petersburg, ein Aufenthalt von welchem er erst 1762 nach Paris zurückkehren sollte. In St. Petersburg erhielt er zahlreiche Aufträge - u. a. von Zarin Elisabeth - für dekorative Malereien, darunter einen Plafond und ca. 45 Supraporten für das Winterpalais (nicht erhalten). 1765 wurde Le Prince ordentliches Mitglied der Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris. Mit seinem Aufnahmestück "Un baptême russe" gab er den Anstoß zur sog. Russenmode, einer Spielart des v. a. in Frankreich beliebten Exotismus in der Kunst. Seine Genreszenen, die er zwischen 1765 und 1781 auf dem Pariser Salon präsentierte, wurden sehr geschätzt. Seit 1775 wandte sich Le Prince überdies verstärkt der Landschaftsmalerei zu.
