Notre dessin est une étude pour Le Midi, partie d’une série de gravures Les Quatre Heures du jour : scènes rustiques, gravées par Adrien Lavieille, d’après les dessins originaux de J.F. Millet, publié à Paris, J. Claye, 1860.

Conçue vers 1858, et gravée en 1860 par Adrien Lavieille, la série de gravures des Quatre Heures du jour s’attache à montrer le côté plaisant, idyllique du travail au milieu d’une nature intacte. Le trajet du couple de paysans vers le champ au petit matin, la sieste commune en milieu de journée, la fin bienfaisante de la journée de travail et la soirée en famille, tout témoigne de l’alliance étroite entre l’homme et la nature. « Elles inspirent l’amour de la campagne et le respect pour le paysan » écrivait le critique Philippe Burty dans la Gazette des Beaux-Arts après la publication de la série. Comme à son habitude, Millet a par la suite utilisé ses dessins pour d’autres œuvres. Les variantes les plus connues sont les pastels reprenant les quatre scènes de la suite de gravures réalisés à la fin des années 1860 : Le Départ pour le travail de 1867 (localisation inconnue), La Méridienne de 1866 (Boston, Museum of Fine Arts), La Fin de la journée de 1867-69 (Rochester, Memorial Art Gallery of the University) et La Veillée de 1867 (Boston, Museum of Fine Arts).

Admirateur de Millet, qu’il considère comme « un peintre plus moderne que Manet », Vincent Van Gogh entreprend en 1889 de traduire en couleurs les Quatre Heures du jour. Il justifie ainsi sa démarche à son frère Théo : « C'est plutôt traduire dans une autre langue, celle des couleurs, les impressions de clair-obscur en blanc et noir ». Des quatre toiles peintes entre 1880 et 1890, La méridienne (Paris, musée d’Orsay) reste la plus emblématique du rapport entre les deux artistes. Elle fut peinte lors du séjour de Van Gogh à Saint-Rémy de Provence alors qu'il était interné dans un asile.
