Große Landschaft mit Ansicht des Zusammenfluss von Rhein und Main bei Mainz
Große, trotz der Wirklichkeitsnähe zwecks Steigerung der Erhabenheit, leicht idealisierte Panorama-Landschaft. Schneider wählte für sein beeindruckendes Hauptwerk den Blick von einem erhöhten Standpunkt von der Mainzer Seite aus nach Osten. Im Mittelgrund links zeigt er das Dorf Kostheim, rechts Gustavsburg, mittig im Hintergrund auf einem darüber liegenden, leicht idealisierten, erhabenen Hügel die damals noch kleine Ortschaft Hochheim am Main. Im linken unteren Bildvordergrund schloss Schneider die Komposition durch einige Häuser eines Mainzer Eckviertels und einen Teil der Mainzer Stadtbefestigung ab. Belebt wird die Vedute durch zahlreiche Figuren im Vordergrund, außer eine flanierende, elegante Familie gehören hierzu mehrere Wäscherinnen, unterschiedliche Bewohner sowie Schiffer in kleinen Ruderbooten und Schiffen. Das Gemälde dürfte wohl um 1785-1790 noch vor der Belagerung von Mainz 1793 mit seinen katastrophalen Zerstörungen entstanden sein. Der fast zeitlebens in Mainz lebende und arbeitende Porträt-, Landschafts- und Vedutenmaler erhielt seine künstlerische Ausbildung bei Franz Joseph Ignaz Anton Heideloff am Hof des kunstsinnigen, sowohl Pracht als auch Wissenschaft liebenden Mainzer Kurfürsten Erzbischof Friedrich Karl Joseph Reichsgraf von Erthal (1719 - 1802, regierend seit 1774). Innerhalb weniger Jahre erlangte er die Anerkennung des Hofes, des Adels und der aufstrebenden Bürgerschaft. 1779 machte sich Schneider zunächst als Porträtmaler selbstständig, um 1785 wandte er sich dann Landschaften am Rhein und Main sowie Veduten von Mainz und Umgebung als Hauptsujet zu. In der Zeit der französischen Besatzung kamen zu seinen Mainzer Auftraggebern auch französische Interessenten hinzu, darunter Mitglieder des französischen Kaiserhauses. Das Motiv und das große, repräsentative Format des vorliegenden Gemäldes lassen auf einen Auftrag einer hochstehenden oder vermögenden Mainzer Persönlichkeit schließen wie den Kurfürsten oder auch den Kunstsammler, Domkapitular und Landschaftsmaler Franz Ludwig Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt (1753 - 1841). Schneider beeinflusste Kesselstatt auch in dessen eigenen Gemälden und als Johann Wolfgang von Goethe 1814/15 zusammen mit dem befreunden Sulpiz Boisserée die Rhein- und Maingegend besuchte, erfreuten ihn auch die Gemälde Schneiders in der Sammlung Kesselstatts.
