Further details

JOHANN GEORG PLATZER (1704-1761), ELEGANT FIGURES PLAYING MUSIC BEFORE A HERM OF PAN, OIL ON COPPER

This elegant composition, with its shimmering colors, demonstrates the delicate technique of Johann Georg Platzer (1704-1761), a leading master of Viennese Rococo. With his characteristic attention to rich fabrics and graceful figures animated by refined gestures, the painting can be understood as an allegory of harmonious love. Yet, the inclusion of the herm of Pan introduces a note of irony into the composition. Known for his petty tales of seduction, Pan prompts us to question the true harmony of the couple. The artist’s choice of copper, his preferred medium, further enhances the exquisite precision of the details.

Born into a family of painters from South Tyrol, Platzer arrived in Vienna around 1726 and enrolled at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste. Together with his friend and contemporary Franz Christoph Janneck (1703-1761), he specialized in small conversation pieces and allegorical works, remarkable for their richness of detail, and soon became a favorite among the Viennese nobility. His astonishing attention to the rendering of detail has often drawn comparisons with theLeiden fijnschilders in the seventeenth century, also renowned for their meticulous technique.
