The Hamburger Kunsthalle has a number of unsigned pencil sketches whose attribution alternates between Johann Joachim Faber and Heinrich Reinhold. Among them is a preliminary drawing of the mountain range in the background of the painting shown here, originally attributed to Faber but now to Reinhold.
Johann Joachim Faber, born in Hamburg and active there again in the last twenty years of his life, found his artistic home in Rome and among the German and Austrian painters who worked there, such as Johann Christian Reinhart and Joseph Anton Koch. Their clear pictorial conception, based on the heroic ideal landscapes of classicism, can also be found in Faber's large painting of the mountain landscape near Salzburg. This work was painted in 1838 in the Hamburg studio, probably based on preliminary drawings and pencil sketches that were recorded in the sketchbook on site.
