JOHANN WILHELM SCHIRMER 1807 Jülich - 1863 Karlsruhe Edge of a forest at evening twilight Oil on canvas (relined). 45 x 66 cm (F. 63 x 84 cm). Signed lower centre 'J. W. Schirmer'. Frame. In the landscape depicted, Johann Wilhelm Schirmer uses a composition that he had already chosen for the engraving ''The Forest with the Sneaking Fox'' in 1829 (catalogue page 413). The silhouettes of two oaks stand out against the background of a dense, dark forest. Their position and the branch pattern on the engraving are almost identical to those in the painting offered here. The brightest area is on the opposite side of the forest, closer to the viewer. Despite the general similarity, the light plays a more significant role in the painted version. Schirmer uses his preferred lateral lighting with typical highlighting of single objects, deep shadows and a gentle immersion of the surroundings into the dusk. The painting's main figure, the stag, is frozen for a moment, gazing towards the setting sun whose last rays glitter on its antlers. It is known that the artist liked to fall back on compositions that had already been tried and tested. We also find a similar composition in the painting '' Evening Tranquillity. River Landscape with Storks'' around 1850 from the collection of the Paffrath Gallery (cf. illustration on page 575 of the catalogue). Literature: Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. Vom Rheinland in die Welt. In der dargestellten Landschaft bedient sich Johann Wilhelm Schirmer einer Komposition, die er bereits 1829 für den Kupferstich ''Der Wald mit dem schleichenden Fuchs'' angewandt hat (Katalogseite 413). Die Silhouetten zweier Eichen zeichnen sich vor dem Hintergrund eines dichten, dunklen Waldes ab. Ihre Position und das Astmuster auf dem Stich sind fast identisch mit denen im hier angebotenen Gemälde. Der hellste Bereich befindet sich auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite des Waldes, näher zum Betrachter. Trotz der allgemeinen Ähnlichkeit spielt das Licht in der gemalten Version eine bedeutsamere Rolle. Schirmer verwendet seine bevorzugte seitliche Beleuchtung mit typischer Hervorhebung einzelner Objekte, tiefen Schatten und einem sanften Eintauchen der Umgebung in die Abenddämmerung. Die Hauptfigur des Gemäldes, der Hirsch, ist für einen Moment erstarrt und blickt in Richtung der untergehenden Sonne, deren letzte Strahlen auf seinem Geweih glitzern. Es ist bekannt, dass der Künstler gern auf bereits erprobte Kompositionen zurückgriff. Eine ähnliche Komposition finden wir zudem in dem Gemälde ''Abendruhe. Flusslandschaft mit Störchen'' um 1850 aus der Sammlung der Galerie Paffrath (vgl. Abbildung auf Seite 575 des Katalogs). Literatur: Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. Vom Rheinland in die Welt.
