Inscribed by the author to his publisher: presentation copy of the first edition, first issue, in the rare dust-jacket. Journey Without Maps was the first of Greene’s travel books to be published. Because of a libel suit, the book was withdrawn shortly after publication, but only after almost all of the 200 copies in the print run had been sold. The recipient of this copy, Alexander Stuart Frere, was Greene’s publisher at Heinemann from 1945, retiring in 1961, the year of the author’s inscription. Wobbe A11a.



Octavo. Frontispiece and 30 photographic illustrations on 23 plates, maps as decorated endpapers printed in brown (occasional insignificant faint spotting, fractionally heavier to pp.234-236). Original yellow cloth, spine lettered in brown, publisher’s logo stamped in brown on lower cover (spine fractionally darkened and rear cover faintly soiled); original pictorial dust-jacket, spine and upper panel lettered in brown with images in black, front flap and rear panel lettered in black, the latter with image in brown (spine slightly stained and soiled, with a few splits to joints and one horizontal split across legs of stilted figure, head of spine restored just touching letters and palm frond on front cover, base of spine restored); contained in a green cloth slipcase. Provenance: Alexander Stuart Frere (publisher, 1892-1984; authorial presentation inscription on half-title dated 7 May 1961: ‘For Frere, always planning all kinds of journeys but this time with maps’).
