Provenienz: Hermann Historica, 24. Auktion 1991, Los 2825. Seither in einer deutschen Privatsammlung.
Fine, dark stained wood, the openwork work brass fittings with remnants of the fire gilding, some mounted over intricate, carved grooved decoration. The two panels closing with a hook, delicately engraved on the inside with the Empress' crowned monogram (on the left) and the King's intertwined monogram (on the right). A finely painted depiction of The Marriage of the Virgin in the style of Raphael, 1504, in the centre. On a stepped, rectangular pedestal. Height 22 cm, width 12.5 cm, with the panels open 24.5 cm. Pedestal dimensions 16 x 5.7 cm.
Raphael's painting of The Marriage of the Virgin has been in the collection of the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan since 1815 and was originally intended as one of three altarpieces for the church near Perugia. The temple in the background could represent the Tempietto di Bramante in Rome, which was built around the same time.
Provenance: Hermann Historica, 24th Auction 1991, lot no. 2825. Thereafter in a private German collection.
