Lot 4143 | Kaiserin Elisabeth von Österreich - prunkvolle Geschenk-Schreibmappe des "Istituto Centrale di Santa Dorotea in Venezia", vermutlich 1861/62
Estimate value
€ 2 000
Provenienz: Hermann Historica, 24. Auktion 1991, Los 2823. Seither in einer deutschen Privatsammlung.
Burgundy velvet cover with appliquéd gold borders and an engraved, fire-gilt clasp (no key). A cartouche on the front with the imperial couple's crowned alliance coat of arms in coloured wool, yellow silk, gold wire and braid, the crown also trimmed with seed pearls, under glass. The interior lined in light grey watered silk, divided into three separate sections with gold-embossed leather labels: "Adresses et Notes", "Lettres Répondues" and "Lettres a Répondre". The opposite side fitted with a large document pocket, partitioned at the top with extremely fine, gold-embossed headings in French for the days of the week, and four pages covered in white silk, with calligraphic dedications in Italian or French, the initial letters of each line finely embroidered in red and gold. Pages of dusky pink blotting paper at the back. Dimensions 36.5 x 26 x 2.5 cm.
The Istituto Centrale di Santa Dorotea dates back to a convent built by Lorenzo Barbara in 1821, housing twenty teaching sisters. In 1838, it was incorporated into the institute of the Maestre di Santa Dorotea, originating in Vicenza, and became an independent congregation in 1840.In total, the Empress spent more than eight months in Venice in 1856/57 and 1861/62, although the Venetian aristocracy in particular made no attempt to hide their hostility towards both her and the Kaiser. This was due to Austria's unpopular sovereignty over Venice, which continued until 1866. Nonetheless, Elisabeth succeeded in winning the hearts of the population with her informal manner and her evident enthusiasm for Venice.
Provenance: Hermann Historica, 24th Auction 1991, lot no. 2823. Thereafter in a private German collection.
