Card player R. & signed (18)69 dated. Oil on wood. 48.5 x 65 cm. Restored. Framework min. dam. Born in Hamburg, studied, Hugo Kauffmann, son of the painter Hermann Kauffmann, first of all, when Johann Günther and Johann Jacob Gensler, before he studied from 1861 to 1863 painting at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. After that, he followed up to 1871, of the Kronberger painter colony, stayed two years in Paris. In 1871 Hugo Kauffmann turned to Munich and took in 1872, his summer residence in Prien am Chiemsee. Like many of his fellow artists was based Kauffman of the Dutch school, and studied particularly the genre scenes with peasants by Adriaen van Ostade, and Adrian Brouwer in the Alte Pinakothek. This led him to a clay range, the received due to the influence of Francis of DefreGelbgolder increasingly a colourful and fresher flavor. In Munich, the painter concentrated due to the great success of the audience primarily on the representation of peasant character heads and genre scenes, often showing humorous events.
