Japan. Meiji Period. Wet ink and light color on yellowish paper. Sog. Nehanzu (the picture of Nirvana). In a circle of light, Shakyamuni is on a kind of Podium, surrounded by his grieving disciples, on the sides, two Kongo rikishi (the guardian figures).
The top inscription 'Nirvana' signed: (Mitsu) kawa & 2 red, unread seal.
Including faster, easier ink clouds, on which his disciple Anuruddha and Mahamaya, his mother, hangs with two servants inside the middle with the bag, containing a medicine against mushroom poisoning, however, unused to the Sala-tree. Above him and below of grieving animals. signed: Kawanabe Gyôsai & two seal. Kawanabe Gyôsai, a famous, eccentric painter, the son of a Samurai who learned as a Boy with Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and later on in the Kano-school occurred before he was working as an independent artist. 1831-1889. He exhibited among others at the International exhibitions in Vienna in 1873 and in 1883 in Paris. 102,5 x 30cm. Condition A/B. enclosed: wood box with inscription: Nehan no (the picture of Nirvana) and Gyosai hitsu.
