The painting, which bears below the goat's head is a later designation of the Viennese court painter Philipp Ferdinand de Hamilton (1640-1750) was assigned to Fred G. Meijer of 2015, the Oeuvre of van de Kerckhovens and is in the RKD, The Hague, under the no 262841 as own hands-the work of the artist registered. Jacob van de Kerckhoven, called in Italy later Giacomo da Castello, was known as one of the most outstanding still life painters and was already in the 18th century. After a period of apprenticeship with Jan Fyt in Antwerp, his early Work is still strongly influenced, and in the Tradition of animal painting by Frans Snyders and Adrian van Utrecht, stands out for his style later on by the use of strong colours and extreme detail. This is evident in the present painting by the precise representation not only of the animals, which are shown up on a goat all live, but also in the numerous vegetables such as cauliflower, celery, garlic and mushrooms. From the 1660s based in Italy, van de Kerckhoven must with the Neapolitan style of painting the life of Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo and Giuseppe Recco in contact, in the Chiaroscuro, he became what is shown in the present painting very clearly.
