SMALL BRASS CASKET WITH VIRTUES.

attributed to Michel Mann.
Date: Presumably ca. 1610.
Technique: Brass, fire gilded and etched, copper, welded steel.
Description: Rectangular shape on small bun feet mounted with pilaster-like and pierced copper
ornaments on the corners and in the centre. The sides and lid with rectangular etched
depictions of the virtues, each labelled at the top: Prudentia, Fortitudo, Fides, Caritas,
Spes and Temperantia. A village landscape on the base. The lock in the lid with four
bolts, the chapel with star ornament. A depiction of the Fama on the inside of the base.
Mark: Inscr. 'Michael Mann' on the ribbon-like lock cover.
Key available. The original lid handle has been lost.
