Balmont writes at the conclusion of a visit to Mexico and California: ‘My dearest mother, forgive me for not having kept my promise of writing to you. But I love and remember you. I am on the wave of impressions. It is impossible to write. I kiss you and papa. Leaving for London…’ .
Balmont’s travel notes and sketches from his visit to Mexico and California were later included in Serpent Flowers (1910). On his return, he played an active part in the 1905 Revolution, and was obliged to flee into exile in Paris, where he remained until the amnesty of 1913.
