CONVOLUTE OF GOOD FRIDAY RATTLES, RATTLE, TRICK-TRACK AND "CHLEFELI".
A set of six Good Friday rattles, a clapper/trick-track and a pair of Swiss "Chlefeli". The instruments show the usual signs of age and use. Good Friday rattles, also called Klepper/Rafele/Raschpel/Klibber, are used at the beginning of the Good Friday liturgy, as the bells are not allowed to ring after the Gloria of Maundy Thursday until the Gloria of the Easter Vigil. The "rattling in Holy Week" was recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in Austria in 2015. These percussion instruments can be found from Alsace to Tyrol to Hungary.
Chlefeli are used as rhythm instruments for dance music. In the canton of Schwyz, they are used as a Lenten instrument by schoolchildren between Ash Wednesday and Holy Saturday.
