Неординарный для традиционной науки ХIХ в. отбор сюжетов, своеобразная политическая концепция сделали «Историю» значительным общественным событием своего времени. Благодаря выдающемуся литературному таланту и стремлению быть исключительно внимательным к характерным деталям эпохи знаменитому историку, этнографу, писателю удалось создать и живописно изобразить целую галерею русских исторических деятелей. Издание украшает большое количество иллюстраций.
Николай Иванович Костомаров (1817—1885) — историк, поэт и драматург, публицист, писатель, педагог и общественный деятель, член-корреспондент Императорской Академии наук, действительный статский советник. Автор многотомного издания «Русская история в жизнеописаниях её главнейших деятелей», исследователь социально-политической и экономической истории России. Один из руководителей Кирилло-Мефодиевского братства.
