Rahmen min. beschädigt Rückseitig auf Leinwand und Keilrahmen Klebetikett Fideikommiss Herzog Clemens Franz de Paula von Bayern mit Nummerierung 117, Inventaretikett ''KOEN. BAIER. GEMAELDE SAMMLUNG 1822'' mit Inventarnummer 7948 und Inventaretikett ''Königl. Bayer. Staats-Gemälde-Sammlung 1855'' mit Inventarnummer 3978. Die Tochter des polnischen Königs Jan III. Sobieski, Therese Kunigunde, wurde 1695 zweite Gemahlin Kurfürst Maximilians II. Emanuel von Bayern. Der Ehe entstammten zehn Kinder, darunter der spätere Kurfürst und Kaiser Karl Albrecht (Karl VII.). Nach Ausbruch des Spanischen Erbfolgekrieges (1701) wurde sie von ihrem im Exil weilenden Gatten zur Regentin Bayerns ernannt. Nach einer Italienreise wurde der Kurfürstin von den österreichischen Besatzern die Rückkehr nach Bayern verwehrt, die vier ältesten Söhne wurden in österreichischen Gewahrsam genommen. Erst 1715 fand die Wiedervereinigung der jahrelang getrennten Familie in Schloss Lichtenberg am Lech statt. Das vorliegende Gemälde sollte aufgrund der Jugendlichkeit der Fürstin in der Zeit der Eheschließung mit Kurfürst Max Emanuel entstanden sein. Die Tatsache, dass sie ein Miniaturbildnis desselben in der Hand hält, verweist auf einen Entstehungszeitpunkt als beide räumlich getrennt waren - ein Leitthema ihrer Ehe. Zu vermuten ist eines der Engagements Max Emanuels, seit 1691 Generealstatthalter der spanischen Niederlande, an der Seite der Allierten im Kampf gegen die französischen Truppen (z. B. 1695 die Wiedereroberung von Namur). 1699 schuf Martin Maingaud ein Porträt Therese Kunigundes als Venus (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Inv.-Nr. 2478), das die Kurfürstin mit sehr vergleichbarer, jedoch etwas reiferer Physiognomie wiedergibt. Provenienz: Clementinum. - Königlich Bayerische (Staats-) Gemälde-Sammlung (Inventare 1822 und 1855). - Aus dem Clementinum an die Familie abgegeben.
