Already in the context of our last Fine Art auction in November 2022, we were able to offer five selected works by the German Impressionist Kurt Kühn for the first time. We are all the more delighted to be able to present further works by this forgotten Impressionist, on the one hand in our upcoming spring auction, and on the other hand in a specially compiled ONLINE-ONLY auction. From 10 - 22 May 2023, numerous paintings, watercolours and drawings by Kurt Kühn can be acquired here with just one click.
His ouvre, which comprises around 600 oil paintings, watercolours and drawings, is influenced by French Impressionism. Kühn studied at renowned art academies and learned from the pioneering artists of his time. His international sojourns, especially in northern Africa, left their mark on his work, which is distinguished by a veritable wealth of facets. The so-called "African years" are among the most artistically formative of his career. From then on, he fused the Exotic with the Impressionistic.
He felt committed to the Impressionist style and remained true to it throughout his life. The dazzling and invigorating colours can be found in almost every work. Due to his absence from Germany for almost 10 years, which was caused by a war captivity, he lost a large number of valuable paintings, large parts of his parents' fortune, and finally also his reputation as an aspiring artist. After the destruction of his studio in Düsseldorf by a bomb and further attempts to resocialise himself artistically, Kühn retired to Bavaria and spent the last 14 years of his life in Wagingen am See.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to the artist's heirs for the wonderful cooperation and their trust in our house.
