Libro de la invencion liberal y arte del juego del Axedrez…Alcalá de Henares : Andrés de Angula, 1561.

Édition originale du premier grand traité théorique consacré au jeu d’échecs. Il a été rédigé par Ruy López de Segura, confesseur du roi Philippe II d’Espagne. Ses fonctions de prêtre l’amènent à voyager à plusieurs reprises en Italie ; il en profite pour rencontrer et battre les meilleurs joueurs du pays. Ces mêmes joueurs italiens prendront leur revanche lors du grand tournoi organisé à la Cour d’Espagne, en 1575, considéré comme la première compétition internationale d’échecs.

L’ouvrage contient notamment les premières analyses des ouvertures qui étaient alors employées.
