FIRST EDITION OF GIROLAMO RUSCELLI'S TRANSLATION. Although Gastaldi's new pocket edition of the Geographia was not reprinted, the maps were adopted and copied by other Italian editors and publishers. The present example, usually referred to by the name of its translator, Girolamo Ruscelli, has the Ptolemaic series of twenty-seven maps, followed by thirty-seven others illustrating contemporary knowledge.
Although the maps are mostly enlargements of Gastaldi, among the "modern" maps in this edition is the world in twin hemispheres, the earliest of its kind to appear in an atlas [Shirley, Mapping of the World 110]. Other maps departing from Gastaldi are: Scandinavia (after Jacob Ziegler, 1532); Brasil (after Ramusio); the Arctic regions (after the infamous "Zeno" map, first published in woodcut in 1558); South Africa; a navigational chart of the world [Shirley 111].
