Estimate value

First Italian edition of the first regional atlas of the New World. Burden calls this edition “the most comprehensive atlas produced between Martin Waldseemüller's Geographiae of 1513, and the Abraham Ortelius Theatrum of 1570. Giacomo Gastaldi had the maps beautifully engraved on copper. This marks a turning point, from now on the majority of cartographic works used this medium [...] it gave the engraver the ability to render more detail.” Of the 60 copper-engraved maps, 26 are Ptolemaic maps of the ancient world, and 34 are modern maps designed by Gastaldi. There are seven maps of the Americas and two world maps (Shirley 87 & 88). Adams P-2234; Phillips Atlases 369; Sabin 66502.
Of particular note in the American maps are:
* the first separate map of the South American continent (map 54)
* the earliest separate map of the Gulf Coast, Mexico, and the present Southwestern United States (map 55)
* the earliest individual map of the East coast of North America. This includes the discoveries made by Giovanni Verrazano in 1524 and is the first cartographic glimpse of New York harbor (map 56)
Octavo (171 x 111m). Title with decorative woodcut borders, woodcut portrait of Ptolemy sighting stars, woodcut initials, and diagrams; 60 double-page engraved maps (beginning of text with pale corner dampstain, title-page marked and stained, scattered minor dust-soiling and spots, some soiling to general Europe and to Germany maps, Asia II map with lower margin renewed, pale stains on Cuba map, small marginal wormhole to last map). Old vellum (rebacked, covers well-chipped, text block cracked near middle, a few leaves rehinged, endleaves worn). Provenance: Francisco de Albergouis (contemporary ownership inscription to title-page verso) – a couple of pages with early marginalia – Benedict Brottÿ (deleted ownership inscription on title and another on f.f.e.).
