Lot 94 | LABAT, Jean-Baptiste (1663-1738)
LABAT, Jean-Baptiste (1663-1738)

Nouveau Voyage Aux Isles de L'Amerique. The Hague: P. Husson, T. Johnson, P. Gosse, J. Van Duren, R. Alberts, and C. Levier, 1724.

Second edition of an important illustrated account of the French Caribbean. Labat, a French Dominican missionary, naturalist and scientist, ministered in the Caribbean from 1693 to 1706 and is regarded as the ‘most prolific informant on the French Caribbean to publish in the eighteenth century’ (Garraway). 'His highly perceptive and scientific description of these and some of the smaller surrounding islands provides some of the only information available from this period' (Howgego) and includes scientific observations, descriptions of flora and fauna, and suggestions for the trade of the islands' natural resources. As noted by Sabin, collation varies between copies, as a result of which this lot is sold not subject to return. Sabin 38410 (listing a map and 91 plates).

6 volumes, 12mo (158 x 92mm). 93 engraved plates, of which many folding (occasional browning and spotting). Contemporary speckled calf, spines lettered and ruled in gilt (some repairs to joints). Provenance: Kenneth K. Mackenzie (label on front pastedowns, dated October 1934, recording bequest to:) – The Horticultural Society of New York (embossed stamp in each volume).
