Lalla Assia Essaydi ist eine bedeutende marokkanische Fotografin, die für ihre inszenierten Fotografien arabischer Frauen in der zeitgenössischen Kunst bekannt ist. Sie ist tätig in Boston, Massachusetts und Marokko und lebt in New York.

Die Beschriftung von Frauenkörpern und -räumen mit Kalligraphie ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil von Essaydis Kunst, der den fortlaufenden, aktiven und Prozess des Werdens und Schaffens betont. Seit ihrer ersten großen Serie Converging Territories (2002-2004) verwendet Essaydi Henna, um die Frauen auf ihren Fotografien mit arabischer Kalligraphie zu umhüllen - eine Fähigkeit, die sie aufgrund ihres Geschlechts in der Schule nicht erlernen konnte. Henna ist eine Form der Verzierung, die einige der glücklichsten und bedeutendsten Momente im Leben einer muslimischen Frau markiert, und Essaydi erhebt diese Tradition, die üblicherweise als "Frauenhandwerk" gilt, zu einem radikalen Akt visueller und sprachlicher Kunstfertigkeit. Die bewusstseinserweiternde, poetische Schrift enthält biografische Details, die sich auf die Erfahrungen der Künstlerin und der Modelle als Frauen beziehen.
