LARGE JARDINIERE "TRITON AND NEREIDE". Schmutzer, Emmanuel. KPM, Berlin. Date: Model 1898. Technique: Porcelain, coloured glaze predominantly in shades of green and blue. Description: The body, designed in dynamic wave shapes, carries the sculptural figurine of a Triton, who approaches the Nereid, who shies away from him. Measurement: 32x70x48cm. Mark: Sceptre mark, various incised marks. Literature:Von Treskow, Irene: Die Jugendstilporzellane der KPM, Munich 1971, cat. no. 18, p.141.Emanuel Schmutzer designed the model of this jardinière in 1898 for the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin. In 1900, it was presented to the public at the Paris World Exhibition. The powerful imagery - together with the tonal colourfulness of the masterfully executed glazing technique - is an impressive testimony to the design language of Art Nouveau and casts a spell over its observer. This rare model only appears on the art market from time to time. One example of this model belongs to the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
