KIEPERT, Heinrich (1818-1899)

Geographer Heinrich Kiepert is generally reckoned one of the more important scholarly cartographers of the second half of the 19th century. Having studied at the University of Berlin, Kiepert worked alongside Carl Ritter (1779-1859). Ritter and Kiepert went onto produce, what is recognised to be, one of the first modern atlases of the ancient Greek world, Topographisch-historischer Atlas von Hellas und den hellenischen Colonien in 24 Blättern (1840-1846).

This 80cm. globe is comprised of two sets of twelve chromolithographed split half-gores and two polar calottes applied to a metal sphere, turning on axis with two brass hour rings supported in graduated meridian, sitting in turned ebonised stand with compass and Zodiacal horizon ring. The cartouche: DIETRICH REIMERS ERDGLOBES für den Weltverkehr Entworf en von PROF. DR. HEINRICH KIEPERT [...]1 : 16,500,000. Geographische Verlagshandhung VON DIFTRICH REIMER (ERNST VORSEM) in Berlin.

155 x 100 x 100cm. (61 x 39 3/8 x 39 3/8in.)

80cm. (31 1/2in.) diameter.
