Lot 18 | Les oiseaux les plus remarquables..., Paris and London, [n.d.], maroon silk boards
Estimate value
£ 7 000 – 9 000
Les oiseaux les plus remarquables par leurs formes et leurs couleurs. Paris: J.L. Tirpenne; London: Gambart, Junin & Co., [no date]

Folio (540 x 378mm.), 18 (only, of 79) very fine hand-coloured plates by Lemercier after Travies, nineteenth-century ownership inscription to title, nineteenth-century maroon silk boards, title lettered in gilt to upper board, green endpapers, slight transfer from plates onto blank versos of facing leaves (not affecting plates or text), extremities slightly rubbed

The first edition of Travies's principal work: "the plates are simply wonderful and are among the best portraits of birds ever painted" (Wood). Part of the charm of Travies's portraits is that he places his subjects in detailed backgrounds, which incorporate not only foliage, flowers, and butterflies, but occasionally towers, churches, cottages, and other architectural features; a few show men shooting with dogs.

Les oiseaux les plus remarquables was evidently issued in serial form as a suite of plates, without title-page or text, rather than as a book. Accordingly, the number of plates varies significantly from copy to copy.
