Lot 261Lingelbach, Johannes. River landscape with resting peasants, in the Background Fort Saint-Jean, and the Chateau de Pierre-Seize, Lyon
At the bottom centered signed. Oil on canvas 89.9 x 104,2 cm. Frame. Lingelbach, a native German, spent most of his time in the Netherlands. In 1634, he moved with his family to Amsterdam. His contemporary, the art biographer Arnold Houbraken reports that he traveled in 1642, France and in two years was, before he traveled to Rome. The present river landscape has long been regarded as the Italian landscape until 2008, by Frits Duparc as a view of Lyon in the North from the Chateau de Pierre-Seize, and the Fort Saint-Jean was identified. Nevertheless, a strong Italia was the influence in the treatment of light and in the exquisite presentation of the figures, reminiscent of the Roman bambocci anti. It is to be presumed, therefore, that Lingelbach created the painting using a French subject, however, until 1650, after his return to Amsterdam.
