A LINEAGE THANGKA FROM THE DRUKPA-KAGYU TRADITION IN BHUTAN - Bhutan, 18th/ 19th c. - According to his rank, he sits on a triple seat cushion, in blue, green and yellow color. His throne is sumptuously furnished, and shielded with an umbrella of honor with white ribbons. The high scholar wears the traditional red hat of this school, on the forehead flap is the golden icon of the "Buddha of Long Life" Amitayus. He wears the monk's vest, the patchwork robe of dispossession, a green cloak and the heavy, richly folded scholar's cloak that envelops his body. His hands are held by the patriarch in the gesture of teaching. In front of him is a small altar with various ritual implements: a water bottle, bell and vajra, a white sacrificial bowl, double drum and a box for sacrificial rice. Two disciples stand by his side. In the upper area other lineage holders appear and in their center Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel - the founder of the state, and 1st king of Bhutan, with his characteristic beard hairstyle. In the lower part several important protector deities of this tradition are depicted: Protector in yab-yum of green color, with bell and vajra; the dakini Simhamukha, the dagger deity Vajrakila, the red-colored Padmasambhava as Guru Dragpo with the scorpion in his left hand, and lastly the blue-colored Vajrapani, holding bell and vajra in his hands. Tempera and gold on cotton fabric, original silk brocade border with bija, some naming. - Important German private collection, collected in the 1970s and 80s, mostly acquired at Schoettle Ostasiatica, Stuttgart.
