A rare eyewitness depiction of the defeat of the "patriotes" during the Papineau rebellion. Louis Joseph Papineau (1786-1871), leader of the Parti Patriote in Lower Canada, fled to the United States following a series of failed uprisings in 1837. Beauclerk’s Views, based on his own sketches and lithographed by Nathaniel Hartnell (c.1829-1864), depict military operations in which he served as a Captain in the First Royals of the British Army. They are considered the most valued account of the rebellion of 1837. Sabin 4164.Quarto (350 x 250mm). 7 plates, including lithographed frontispiece map and 6 hand-colored lithographed plates (plates 3 and 5 shaved with loss to imprint). (Inner margins extended or strengthened in several places, particularly in preliminaries; small chip to upper corner of title; adhesive ghosts to inner margins of plates, not affecting images at all.)
