Further details
Overlooking the Saint-Lazare train station in Paris, the Pont de l'Europe was often painted by Impressionist artists, including Monet and Caillebotte, who depicted it in many works dating from 1876-77. Monet, the father of Impressionism, painted a dozen pictures on the subject and presented a first version at the third Impressionist exhibition. Caillebotte, for his part, was fascinated by the subject and even bought three of Monet's variations on the theme of this train station. No doubt this eminently Impressionist and modern subject also fascinated Louis Anquetin, as can be seen from the present pastel, executed in 1889.
In addition to its subject, this work's provenance is also worth mentioning. It belonged to Eugène Boch, a Belgian artist and patron of the arts who collected works by Cézanne and exchanged works with Van Gogh. Van Gogh painted the famous Portrait d’Eugène Boch ou Le Peintre aux étoiles, 1888 (Paris, Musée d'Orsay).
