Die Darstellung der Maria (Madonna) lactans findet sich im Schaffen Lucas Cranachs und seiner Werkstatt mehrfach. Vgl. hierzu die Datenbank des Corpus Cranach (https://cranach.ub.uni-heidelberg.de), dort im Speziellen die Nummer CC-CMM-150.112. Bei dieser handelt es sich um das "Urbild Cranachs" (Öl auf Holz, 84 x 57 cm), das sich heute als Leihgabe der Pfarrei Weinhaus im Wiener Dommuseum befindet. Auch das vorliegende, nahezu formatgleiche Gemälde aus der Nachfolge des Künstlers geht kompositionell auf das Wiener Vorbild zurück.
