Der 1929 in Madrid geborene Lucio Muñoz war einer der wichtigsten Vertreter informeller, abstrakter Kunst in Spanien in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine künstlerische Entwicklung nahm eine entscheidende Wendung, als Muñoz 1956 ein Stipendium zum Kunststudium in Paris erhält. In Paris setzt sich Muñoz mit Art Brut auseinander und lernt das Werk von Jean Dubuffet, Jean Fautrier, Wols und Antoni Tàpies. kennen. In dieser Zeit entdeckt er Holz als Ausdrucksmedium, ein Material, dem traditionell keine malerische Qualität zugesprochen wird. Auf unterschiedlichste Art bearbeitet - geritzt, durchbohrt, verbrannt, geschnitzt oder ausgehöhlt und in Assemblagen verbunden - ist Holz ab Ende der 1950er Jahre der Bedeutungsträger seiner Bilder, die in ihrer archaischen Expressivität von einem so poetischen wie puristischen Naturverständnis künden.
1983 wurde Lucio Muñoz der spanische Nationalpreis für Bildende Künste verliehen. 1989 widmet ihm das Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid eine Retrospektive. 2004 zeigt das Kunsthistorische Museum Wien einen Werküberblick. Der Nachlass des Künstlers wird von der Marlborough Galerie in Madrid betreut.
