Ludwig von Schwanthaler erhielt seinen ersten künstlerischen Unterricht bei seinem Vater, dem Bildhauer Franz-Jakob Schwanthaler (1760 Ried/Innkreis - 1820 München). In seinen frühen Jahren - als 15-Jähriger - fertigte er ausweislich des Titelblattes zahlreiche Landschafts- und Architekturstudien an. Diese belegen Reisen nicht nur im deutschsprachigen Raum - vorwiegend Bayern und Österreich -, es finden sich französische, schweizerische, italienische und spanische Orte dargestellt. Ob er diese allerdings als noch so junger Mensch alle aus eigener Anschauung kannte, lässt zumindest das Blatt "Das heilige Grab zu Jerusalem" bezweifeln. Selbst wenn er vor Beginn seines Studiums (1819) offensichtlich die Möglichkeit zu einer eigenen Kavalierstour hatte, ist es eher unwahrscheinlich, dass er dabei bis in das Heilige Land kam ...
