ATTRIBUTED TO MAERTEN DE VOS 1532 Antwerp - 4 December 1603 Ibid THE ANNUNCIATION Oil on oak panel (cradled), top rounded to fit. 108 x 69 cm (F.120 x 82 cm). Partly slightly old rest., min. old retouching. Probably original frame of the 16th century. The RKD in The Hague lists three weaker and compositionally slightly different variants of the same theme, which were created in the circle of Maerten de Vos (cf. RKD The Hague, fig. no. 0000 122 599). In these compositions, the space on the left is open and delimited by a row of light-flooded windows, whereas in the variant offered here, columns divide the space in the pictorial structure. Furthermore, in the repetitions the floor pattern breaks with the linear spatial design, the mannerist colourfulness is replaced by primary colours. The composition offered here could possibly have been a commission from the Rhenish monastery to the artist. The figurative elaboration, colourfulness and quality of the overall composition certainly allow the assumption that this is Vos' original composition and thus an independent work by the artist. Part. leicht altrest., min. Altretuschen. Wohl Originalrahmen des 15. Jh. Das RKD in den Haag führt drei schwächere und kompositorisch leicht differente Varianten des gleichen Themas, die im Umfeld Maerten de Vos' entstanden sind, auf (vgl. RKD Den Haag, Abb. Nr. 0000 122 599). In diesen Kompositionen ist links der Raum geöffnet und wird durch eine Reihe lichtdurchfluteter Fenster begrenzt, während in der hier angebotenen Variante Säulen den Raum im Bildgefüge gliedern. Weiterhin bricht in den Wiederholungen das Bodenmuster mit der linearen Raumgestaltung, die manieristische Farbigkeit wird durch Primärfarben ersetzt. Die hier angebotene Komposition könnte möglicherweise eine Auftragsarbeit des rheinischen Klosters an den Künstler gewesen sein. Die figurative Ausarbeitung, Farbigkeit und Qualität der Gesamtkomposition lässt die Vermutung, dass es sich hier um die Originalkomposition Vos' und somit um ein eigenständiges Werk des Künstlers handelt, sicherlich zu.
