The "Pacific Ring of Fire" by Czech conceptual artist Magdalena Jetelova, like her "Iceland Project" from 1992, takes up the theme of natural, geological boundaries. At the point where the Pacific plate meets several other continental plates, the Pacific Ring of Fire surrounds the Pacific plate in a horseshoe shape with a volcanic belt. In Patagonia, Jetelova uses mathematical calculations to mark the plate boundary with a laser beam, as clear elevations are not visible due to the perpetual ice. Messages such as "Why" were written with a laser pointer on the changing, partially collapsing icebergs. The drastic geological changes caused by climate change are clearly expressed in these photographic images, which are presented in large-format light boxes.
Magdalena Jetelova is one of the outstanding, internationally recognized artists of the present day. Her work is characterized by artistic radicalism and consistency. In 1987, she was represented at the 8th documenta in Kassel and was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She has received numerous scholarships and prizes and is an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts, Berlin. Her works can be found in the Kunsthalle Hamburg, the Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Aachen, the Museum für angewandte Kunst, Vienna and the Museum im Kulturspeicher, Würzburg, among others.
