Kunst als Wunde der Geschichte
Manolo Millares gehört zu den zentralen Figuren der spanischen Nachkriegskunst. Geprägt vom Surrealismus der 1940er Jahre beschäftigt er sich als Autodidakt zunächst mit figurativer Malerei, bevor er sich ab 1953 der informellen Kunst zuwendet.
Seine Werke sind mehr als bloße Bildkompositionen - sie sind physische Manifestationen von Geschichte, Leid und menschlicher Existenz. Millares' einzigartige Materialästhetik, geprägt durch den expressiven Einsatz von groben Sackleinen, die er zerreißt, verdreht und verschnürt, verleiht seinen Arbeiten eine haptische Qualität, die teilweise fast archaisch wirkt. Seine künstlerische Sprache entwickelte sich aus der tiefen Auseinandersetzung mit der Kultur der Guanchen, den Ureinwohnern Teneriffas. Die Zerstörung dieser Kultur durch die spanische Kolonialisierung prägte sein Schaffen ebenso wie sein Bewusstsein für Vergänglichkeit und Verlust.
Leben und Tod
In dem Werk Forma Abisal von 1966 bildet ein Stück gedrehtes Leinen den Bildmittelpunkt und ruft vage Assoziationen an einen menschlichen Körper hervor. Kordeln und Bänder sind in die Komposition eingeflochten und überragen den Bildrand. Die Farbigkeit ist reduziert auf Weiß und Schwarz - Leben und Tod - sowie Rot als Farbe des Blutes, der Glut und Energie. Millares war weniger an Farbe als an der Materialität des Bildträgers und dessen Verletzlichkeit interessiert. Die verschnürten und verknoteten Sackleinen verleihen dem Werk eine nahezu skulpturale Präsenz und sind als Metaphern der sinnbildlichen Verletzungen des Lebens zu deuten.
Die zum Aufruf kommende Arbeit repräsentiert nicht nur einen Höhepunkt in Millares' Schaffen, sondern auch die Essenz seines künstlerischen Anliegens: die visuelle Reflexion über Zerstörung und Widerstand. Das Werk verbindet eine intensive physische Präsenz mit einer tiefen historischen und emotionalen Bedeutung.
