Die vorliegende, poetisch-märchenhafte, farbintensive, höchst malerisch umgesetzte Lithographie aus der Folge „Le Cirque“ gehört mit seiner für Chagall charakteristischen Bildererfindung zu den schönsten und augenfälligsten Blättern dieser Folge. Es fängt die dynamische, lebhafte Energie des Zirkus und seiner Artisten ein, indem es eine facettenreiche Darstellung einer Zirkusvorstellung mit verschiedenen Nummern zeigt. Marineblau und Rosarot verschmelzen im oberen Bildbereich zu violetten Farbwolken und erwecken die Illusion wellenförmiger Schatten unter dem Zirkuszelt. Die verschiedenen Figuren und das rote Pferd scheinen unabhängig von den Gesetzen der Schwerkraft oder der Perspektive traumhaft im Raum zu schweben. Kompositorisch und musikalisch wird die Szene durch eine fantastische fischähnliche Figur mit einer Handtrommel, eine Figur mit Geige und eine überdimensionale, engelsgleiche Figur mit Flöte umrahmt. Die tiefe Verbundenheit, Faszination und Liebe Chagalls zum Zirkus und seinen Artisten geht auf prägende Kindheitserinnerungen im Dorf Witebsk in Russland zurück. Für Chagall blieb der Zirkus zugleich eine "Metapher des Lebens" und 1967 schrieb er in "Le Cirque" (in Übersetzung): „Ich habe Clowns, Akrobaten und Schauspieler immer als tragisch menschliche Wesen betrachtet (…)“. Ende der 1920er Jahren regte ihn Ambroise Vollard, der bedeutende Verleger, Kunsthändler und Zirkusenthusiast dazu an, das Zirkus-Thema in einer druckgraphischen Folge umzusetzen, doch blieb es bei 19 vorbereitenden Gouachen. Erst in den 1960er Jahren konnte der Verleger Tériade Chagall ermuntern, sich erneut intensiv dem Zirkus-Thema zu widmen. Chagall befasste sich 1965-1967 begeistert mit der Idee der Herausgabe seines Textes "Cirque" mit eigenen Illustrationen in einem Buch. Das 1967 in einer Auflage von 250 Exemplaren bei Tériade erschienene "Le Cirque" gehört zweifellos zu den bedeutendsten und persönlichsten aller illustrierten Bücher Chagalls, für das er 23 prachtvolle Farblithographien schuf. Neben der Buchausgabe wurde eine luxuriöse, separate Suite der Farblithographien mit breiterem Rand in einer Kleinauflage von nur 24 Exemplaren gedruckt, jedes Blatt einzeln von Chagall signiert und nummeriert. Darstellung ca 42,5 cm x 32,4 cm; Blatt ca. 51,1 cm x 38,1 cm. Rahmen.
