[MARCHAND, Etienne (1755-1793)] and FLEURIEU, Charles Pierre Claret de (1738-1810).

Voyage autour du monde, pendant les années 1790, 1791, et 1792 by Étienne Marchand. Paris: L'Imprimerie de la Republique, An VI-VIII [1798-1800].

The first edition, in the preferred quarto issue and uncut in the original boards, describing of the first French commercial voyage to the Pacific Northwest. Marchand, commander of the expedition, had learned of the rich rewards to be earned in the North Pacific fur trade from Captain Portlock. He sailed via Cape Horn and traded along the Northwest coast in the summer of 1791. Upon his return to France, the cargo was confiscated by the Revolutionary government, resulting in a loss for his investors. Marchand died in 1793 and Fleurieu, himself an experienced Pacific explorer, took over the editing and publication of the materials from the voyage, which include descriptions of Norfolk Sound and Sitka, followed by a particularly detailed account of the Queen Charlotte Islands, and further explorations as far as the southern end of Vancouver Island. Forbes 292; Hill 612; Howes F-195; Lada-Mocarski 54.

Four volumes, quarto (vols 1-3: 270 x 205mm; atlas: 310 x 230mm). 16 engraved plates (vol. 1: faint dampstain to upper corner at beginning of vol., rough opening causing 110mm marginal tear just into headline and first line of text affecting a few letters on Sss1, and marginal tears to leaves Vvv1-2 also caused by rough opening, a couple of other very short marginal tears; vols II and III unopened and with some light variable browning; vol. IV: G3 with 50mm marginal repaired tear, variable browning and spotting throughout, mainly confined to head of leaves, and with plates I and XIV more heavily affected). Uncut in the original pink paper-covered boards preserving many deckle edges, sheep spine labels lettered in gilt (covers slightly unevenly faded, short split at head of upper joint to vol. I). Provenance: James Smith (1782-1867; Glaswegian merchant and geologist of Jordanhill; engraved armorial Chippendale-style bookplate) – Agustin E. Edwards (library booklabel).
