Lot 4256 | Marine chronometer: important English one-day chronometer, Th…
Estimate value
€ 3 500 – 10 000
Ca. 16x 16 x 16cm, 3-part mahogany case, glazed, gimbal suspension, brass case, unusual, small chronometer with only 76mm diameter, spring detent chronometer escapement, chronometer balance with two trapezoidal weights and two platinum screws, helical hairspring, diamond endstone, signed and numbered dial, blued steel hands, in working order, well preserved, very early English marine chronometer. The dial is signed Thomas Baker. Thomas Baker was supplied by Thomas Earnshaw and did not produce any marine chronometers himself. The motion train has the typical Earnshaw "quick-train" toothing. It is therefore one of the rarest English chronometers. Only a few Earnshaw marine chronometers are still in existence today. Information on the connection between Earnshaw and Baker can be found in "Marine Chronometers at Greenwich".
