Lot 527 | Marmorstatue eines Togatus, römisch, 1. Jahrhundert vor Christus
Estimate value
€ 40 000
Provenienz: Italienische Sammlung, zuvor französische Sammlung (L.), 1980er Jahre. Mit französischem Antikenpass und italienischer Exportgenehmigung.
Zustand: II -
A Roman marble statue of a togatus, 1st century B.C.
Impressive marble statue of a togatus, slightly smaller than life-sized. Dressed in a toga, the formal wear for Roman citizens, the subject is portrayed in the typical oratorical gesture, slightly animated: rendered with extravagant folds, the robe is worn over a tunic, extending down over his right leg, bent at an angle, the left arm held aloft, to emphasise that he is holding a speech. Accordingly, the statue is of a Roman citizen, addressing a council meeting (or the senate). The head, the left hand, the right forearm and the tip of the left foot are missing. Further damage. Height 110 cm. Mounted on a metal pedestal. An impressive carved testimony to the republican self-image of Roman citizens.
Provenance: Italian collection, previously French collection (L.), 1980s. With French antique passport and Italian export licence.
